Lucian Grainge
Chairman and CEO, Universal Music Group International
Lucian Grainge has been in music all his working life. He started PolyGram Music Publishing in the UK from scratch and took the division into the top three publishing companies, before moving to Polydor Records and reshaping it into an industry powerhouse.
He served for seven years as Chairman/CEO of Universal Music UK. He was promoted to the role of CEO of Universal Music Group in February 2010, a role that becomes effective on January 1st, 2011. Today, he oversees all functions of Universal Music Group International, the division which manages Universal Music Group’s wholly-owned businesses in more than 50 countries outside North America.
As the world’s largest music company, Universal Music Group discovers, develops, markets and distributes recorded music through its global network. In the UK, Universal Music has signed and developed dozens of artists in the past five years. They include Amy Winehouse, whose second release, Back To Black, was the biggest-selling artist album globally in 2007, and Duffy, the biggest-selling UK debut artist of 2008.
Lucian has expanded Universal Music’s horizons, forging innovative relationships with media partners worldwide including Nokia, Sky, 19, Vodafone, Endemol and the BBC.
