Julia Barfield MBE RIBA
Founder Director, Marks Barfield Architects

Julia Barfield studied at the Architectural Association and spent her year out in South America, working in the barriadas of Lima in Peru. She worked for Richard Rogers & Partners and Foster Associates for a total of nine years and was project architect for the Sackler Galleries.

Together with husband David Marks, Julia created the London Eye and was a co-founder and Director of the London Eye Company that developed the project (winner of over 25 awards). Julia was awarded an MBE for the London Eye in The Queen’s New Year Honours List and became a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). Marks Barfield Architects has won Architectural Practice of the Year and a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

During the last 19 years, she has designed award-winning projects in the leisure, housing, transport, education and cultural sectors, most recently the Lightbox gallery, museum and community space in Woking which won the Art Fund Prize.
