John Battle was appointed Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 29 July 1999.
Mr Battle was previously Minister of State at the Department of Trade and Industry since 1997. He was responsible for energy and energy policy; industry, including manufacturing engineering, innovation and design.
Mr Battle was educated at Leeds University. He worked in research from 1979-1983 before becoming National Co-ordinator for Church Action on Poverty from 1983-1987. He was a member of Leeds City Council from 1980-1987, chairing the Economic Development and Housing Committees.
During the last Parliamentary Session, he was Shadow Energy spokesman from 1995-1997 and was spokesman on Housing 1992-1994 and Science 1994-1995.
Mr Battle has been MP for Leeds West since 1987. He was born in 1951, is married with three children and lives in Leeds. His interests including walking, poetry and supporting Leeds United FC.
