PLAIN SPEAKING ON EUROPE (04/12/2001)
In a speech at the London School of Economics, Minister for Europe, Peter Hain, emphasised the importance of plain speaking about the European Union Treaties. He said that although the language of these treaties is often difficult to understand, they were agreed by all the EU governments and ‘designed to satisfy everyone; to protect everyone’s interest’. He outlined, the key principles of the Treaty of European Union, and the Treaty establishing the European Communities’ and said that the Government would be taking steps to ensure that information on Europe is widely available and easy to understand. He added that the Government supports the Treaty of Nice ‘because it will make Britain stronger and open the door for EU enlargement and a stronger, safer, richer Europe’.
