‘PROGRESS IN AFGHANISTAN AND RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA’
The Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, gave an interview for BBC Radio 4 on 7 December on the end of the Taliban regime and future relations with Russia. He stressed the Prime Minister's point that recent events were 'a total vindication of the strategy' which he and President Bush set out on 11 September. Mr Straw added 'we should be celebrating these extraordinary achievements of the military, political, diplomatic and humanitarian coalition against the Taliban and these forces of evil'. The Foreign Secretary went on to clarify future UK and US relations with Russia, that, 'We want extensive, detailed, co-operation and collaboration with Russia and they with us. Russia does not want to be a member of NATO, they haven’t asked and so decisions by NATO will continue to be made by the nineteen NATO members, not by those nineteen plus one'.
