Fixed-term employees get new protection

Loan to British Energy extended
The short-term loan agreed between British Energy and the government earlier this month is to be extended until 29 November, and has been increased from GBP410 million to GBP650 million. The loan has been given in compliance with the European Commission rules on rescue aid.(26 September 2002)

More money pledged for Commonwealth Education Fund
Chancellor Gordon Brown, and Governor of the Bank of England Sir Edward George, have announced the auction of collectable low-numbered GBP5 banknotes. The proceeds of the sale will go towards the Commonwealth Education Fund's work in supporting education programmes in Commonwealth countries.(24 September 2002)
