Environmental equality

Populations living in areas with, in relative terms, the least favourable environmental conditions, by region, 2001-06

  • This is the national indicator for environmental equality first released in July 2007.  It shows the proportion of people in graduated 10% bandings of the 2004 indices of multiple deprivation experiencing different numbers of the least favourable environmental conditions for a variety of criteria.
  • A version of this indicator for each region can be found in the links below.  The following table provides context by the showing the number of people that the proportions on these graphs relate to.

Number (thousands) of people in each graduated 10% band of the Indices of Multiple Deprivation by Region, 2004

  • By definition, as the underlying geography is made up of population based super output areas, approximately 10% of the population nationally lived in areas classed in each graduated 10% band of the 2004 indices of multiple deprivation.
  • The table shows how the population in these bands were split across the regions and provides context for the environmental equality graphs below which show the proportion of people in each region and each band by the number of unfavourable environmental conditions experienced in their area.
