Farm Waste Grant Scheme

The Farm Waste Grant (Nitrate Vulnerable Zones) Scheme provides help to farmers in Nitrate Vulnerable Zones who are installing or improving farm waste storage facilities. Nitrate Vulnerable Zones were established to comply with the provisions of Council Directive 91/676/EEC, which aims to reduce the levels of diffuse pollution by nitrate from agricultural sources by requiring farmers to limit their applications of livestock manures and, in some circumstances, to observe closed periods for the application of organic manure to agricultural land.

As was assured in the Action Plan for Farming, a grant rate of 40% is now available to eligible farmers who need to construct or upgrade their manure handling and storage facilities to comply with the Action Programme measures. Farmers are advised to check with the East Midlands Rural Development Service before commencing work. Further details of the scheme are available in the booklet Farm Waste Grant Scheme (PB8632) (Adobe Acrobat format) or by calling the FWGS National Centre at East Midlands Rural Development Service direct on 0115 900 5459.
