Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Patricia Hewitt, e-Envoy Andrew Pinder and Chief Executives from across the private and voluntary sectors today 'clicked off' the greatest ever technology give-away to encourage people to use the internet and experience the benefits of going online. Over 8000 online centres will now be offering free internet starter sessions until the end of June.

The e-Summit was the first event of its kind and attracted "e-Envoys" from around the world. It marked the publication of the World's Most Effective Policies for the e-Economy Report. The OeE invited the benchmarked countries, other nations and organisations, and private sector partners, to an event where we could discuss the report's findings and share policy experiences.

For the second year running the Office of the e-Envoy exhibited at the Government Computing 2002 in Islington. The stand was well visited by attendees from central and local government, education, industry, defence, as well as representatives from other countries.

The new e-GIF Compliance Assessment Service is now in operation. Adherence to electronic-Government Interoperability Framework (e-GIF) specifications and policies is mandated for legacy systems involved with electronic service delivery targets and for new systems for the exchange of information between government systems and the interactions between UK Government and citizens, UK Government and businesses (world wide), UK Government organisations, UK Government and other governments (UK/EU, UK/US etc.)

Building on the work of the Information Age Partnership (IAP) "Measuring UK success" task group, Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH), with input from INSEAD, have developed a benchmarking framework to conduct an evaluation of the UK compared against G7 countries plus Australia and Sweden.
The Guidelines for UK government websites provide a comprehensive blueprint of best practices for building and managing well designed usable and accessible websites. They detail managerial, content and technical requirements, recommendations and suggestions of best practice, sample cut and paste markup, tutorials and checklists.
A draft new DTV policy framework for delivering e-government services was launched for consultation on 28 October 2002. The document highlights DTV as a key channel for pervasive and inclusive delivery of government services. The consultation period was for 3 months and is now closed, but the documents are still available in the Consultations Archive.
A new design and navigation for the UK online interactive service has gone live on Sky digital TV following months of hard work by the Office of the e-Envoy.
A team working on the Government’s Knowledge Network has today been named as the Information Age Innovators of the Year at the annual Government Computing Innovation Awards.
