Our nations' fisheries

The fish populations of England and Wales, together with the fisheries these support, are very valuable.

Fish are regarded as excellent indicators of environmental quality, and both angling and net fishing contribute substantially to the economies of both countries.

Our nations' fisheries, released in May 2004, is a survey of the fish populations in the rivers, streams and lakes in England and Wales. The most comprehensive survey of its kind, it gives details of how valuable our fisheries really are, how well they are faring and what stresses and strains are affecting them.

The pages below give you a flavour of what's in the Our nations' fisheries report, a full copy of which can be downloaded at the bottom of the page:

  • Introduction
Learning to fish What are fisheries? Why are they important? And how are they faring?
  • Participation and value
Wild trout fishing How angling, the country's most popular participation sport, is bringing considerable economic and social benefits.
  • Fisheries by type
River Wantsum Here we report on four groupings of fishery: coarse, salmon and sea trout, trout and grayling and eels and elvers.
  • Factors affecting fish stocks
The Shopham Loop How water quality, siltaton and climate change can all have a dramatic effect on our fish and fish stocks.
