The Legalisation Office in the FCO is the only UK authority able to issue legalisation certificates (sometimes called apostilles), with the exception of the Crown Dependencies; the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.
It is a big, busy office in the Old Admiralty Building, where we legalise the signatures of officials, such as Notaries or Registrars, on certain documents. These documents will be used to enable people to live, work or conduct business overseas. 2004 saw a great demand for legalising birth certificates etc, to enable people to marry overseas. Last year we issued 264,565 legalisation certificates.
