The Retained Organs Commission will formally cease to operate on 31 March 2004.

The content of this site is current as at 31 March 2004 and will remain static thereafter for reference.

The site will be available for approximately 12-18 months from 31 March 2004 or until further notice to provide reference material and a source of historical information. It will not be updated.

Closure of the Commission

The National Bereavement Partnership has set up a national helpline which aims to support families and the general public by providing information about organ retention. It will not deal directly with NHS Trusts or provide an advocacy service for families.

The helpline will be operational from Friday 26 March 2004 on: 01179 554 055

The Retained Organs Commission was set up by the Secretary of State for Health, as recommended by the Chief Medical Officer in his advice to the Government on the taking and retention of organs and tissues at post-mortem examinations. It is a Special Health Authority, as set out by the Secretary of State in his Statement to the House of Commons on 30 January 2001.
