PM condemns North Korea s nuclear test

9 October 2006

Tony Blair has called North Korea’s first underground nuclear weapon test "irresponsible".

He said the international community had repeatedly urged the cessation of the programme and the test showed "disregard for the concerns of North Korea’s neighbours".

In a statement from Downing Street the PM said:

"I condemn this completely irresponsible act by the government of the DPRK (Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea). The international community has repeatedly urged them to refrain from both missile testing and nuclear testing. This further act of defiance shows North Korea’s disregard for the concerns of its neighbours and the wider international community and contravenes DPRK’s commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and UN Security Council Resolution 1695."
