| Following the recommendations of the Curry Commission, Defra, working with a range of other key organisations, has drawn up a regional food strategy aimed at providing additional support for the added-value regional food sector. As such it forms one of the measures assisting farmers to add value, as set out in the SFF strategy. FFB, with an additional £1 million (for each of the next three years starting 1 April 2003) from Defra, are taking a lead role in England in implementing a national programme of regional food initiatives covering trade development, increasing competitiveness and raising consumer awareness. This will complement the substantial assistance to the sector by the RDAs who within their own regional food strategies are addressing issues relating to the availability of processing facilities and problems of distribution. |

8.3.6 |
Part of NHS Plan commitment to reduce early deaths from cancer and heart disease, by improving diet and nutrition. |
Started in 2000 |
 |
Department of Health |
| Links between poor diet and health led to this issue being addressed, through the NSF’s on Coronary Heart Disease (2000) and Diabetes (2001), and the programme for action on health inequalities (2002). Evaluation results from 5 A DAY pilots published November 2002 –showed positive impact on intake, access and awareness of fruit and vegetables. New Opportunities Fund providing £10 million to set up 66 new PCT led local 5 A DAY initiatives in deprived areas during 2003. |
| The new initiatives will work in a variety of setting to increase consumption, by improving access and availability to fruit and vegetables for example setting up delivery schemes, and improving attitudes and awareness, through work with schools and community groups. |
| 5 A DAY logo launched March 2003 as part of a communications programme to increase awareness of the health benefits of fruit and vegetables, particularly targeting those with the lowest intakes. In particular the programme will provide clear and consistent messages about 5 A DAY. Over 275 organisations licensed by January 2004 including national supermarket chains. |
