Freedom of Information Act 2000 HM Revenue & Customs Publication Scheme

HM Revenue & Customs is responsible, under the overall direction of Treasury Ministers for:

  • The efficient administration of income tax, corporation tax, VAT, capital gains tax, petroleum revenue tax, inheritance tax, national insurance contributions, stamp duties and other excise and customs duties.
  • The payment of Working Families Tax Credit, Disabled Persons' Tax Credit and Children's Tax Credit (these were replaced by Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit from April 2003, and from this date HMRC also administers Child Benefit).
  • Front line role in protecting our society from illegal imports of drugs, alcohol and tobacco smugglings, and tax fraud.
  • Making sure that all employers meet the National Minimum Wage rules.
  • Collecting repayments of Student Loans in the majority of cases.

HM Revenue & Customs is also responsible for the Valuation Office Agency (this link will open a new window). The Valuation Office Agency is an Executive Office of the Department and provides valuations for land and buildings to a variety of public sector customers.
