The standards and markers of good practice of the National Service Framework (NSF) for Renal Services apply to patients of all ages, but this document relates them specifically to the care of children and young people, in greater detail than was possible in the NSF itself. It also brings them together with recommendations from the NSF for Children, Young People and Maternity Services, to make an accessible, user-friendly document for all those with an interest in services for children and young people with kidney disease.

Renal action learning sets have been established in the areas of non-emergency patient transport for dialysis patients, in urban and rural areas; information and prevention of chronic kidney disease in primary care, and the extension of palliative care to renal services. Learning sets bring together key individuals in service delivery in small dynamic groups to learn with others by probing, understanding and action.
This Report follows the Renal Action Learning Sets Sharing Event in January 2006. It provides a summary of the work of the learning sets and includes a note from the project lead and the national facilitator as well as the slides from the day. Also included is some valuable information which resulted from the lively discussions which took place on the day.
An information pack (available in March 2006) on Action Learning, including a DVD which captures the experience of the Action Learning Sets commissioned by the Department to work on service improvements for renal and pathology services, together with a leaflet giving further information on the work of the Renal (and Pathology) Action Learning Sets, and a handbook on Action Learning.
