It has been identified that patients who are referred for a specialist opinion regarding lower GI symptoms should normally be directed to a diagnostic test in the first instance. (Belfry Plan 2004). This requires a clear history to be obtained from the patient either by the referring doctor or by telephone or post in order to direct the patient to the most appropriate test. This guide provides examples of HOW local teams have implemented "STRAIGHT TO TEST" which has shown to improve their patients’ pathways by reducing their journey times.
