Equality and diversity

 

Equality and diversity are at the heart of the NHS strategy. Investing in the NHS workforce allows us to deliver a better service and improve patient care in the NHS.

NHS Employers' equality and diversity team offers advice, assistance and support to NHS organisations. These pages have practical examples of what trusts are doing to embed equality and diversity in their organisation.

Equality impact assessments
This page has examples of how NHS organisations have approached developing equality impact assessments and embedded EIAs in their organisation.

Single equality schemes
This page has examples of how NHS organisations have developed a single equality scheme that covers all three duties of race, disability and gender, as well as other areas such as religion and belief.

Positively diverse
Positively Diverse is the overarching programme for the delivery of equality and diversity to NHS organisations; and it forms a core part of the work of NHS Employers' equalities team. These pages shows what trusts have achieved through the Positively Diverse programme.

Positive action
These pages have examples of positive action initiatives in trusts, aimed to address an imbalance in employment opportunities amongst groups that have previously experienced disadvantages.

Disability equality
This page has examples of what trusts have done to address disability equality.

Diversity training
The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust set up this initiative to ensure that all consultant medical staff had an understanding and awareness of current equal opportunities legislation and trust policy, before participating in selection panels.

Multi-lingual emergency phrasebook
Producing a multi-lingual emergency phrasebook for ambulance staff.

Men's health MOT sessions
Plymouth Teaching Primary Care Trust reduced health inequalities in one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in Plymouth, by running a series of health sessions to help men access services at the same rate as women.

The midlife future planning course
Sandwell PCT funded the Agewell initiative, a midlife future planning course to help local people make more informed choices about their retirement.

Diversity inclusion
Plymouth Teaching Primary Care Trust (PCT) has set up a network of diversity inclusion champions, to ensure that equality and diversity is core to service delivery and employment.

Employability project
Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust developed the Employability project with Leeds City Council, to give disadvantaged groups valuable work experience to help them secure a permanent job.

Meeting standards for better health
Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust actively canvassed the views of black and minority ethnic (BME) staff to source current data and track progress against the Standards for Better Health.

Placement opportunities
Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust helped people get back into the workplace through a placement programme, and addressed some of its recruitment needs for healthcare support worker posts.

Valuing people leads
Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust developed a network of staff leads, to drive its equality and diversity agenda through its valuing people strategy.

Improving the process
Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust improved its maternity leave process, including communication to employees, to give outcomes for staff and managers, and positive results for the organisation.

Race
The Improving Working Lives (IWL) Standard makes it a requirement for NHS organisations to promote and achieve equality of opportunity, and freedom from harassment and discrimination for all staff. The 2000 amendment of the Race Relations Act (RRA) provides the legal imperative.
