Aim 1. Effective and efficient use of NHS resources

  • Controlled expenditure on GP services through the General Medical Services contract, saving an estimated £498m.
  • Agreed pension scheme changes with the NHS trade unions that will save employers £430m a year.
  • Supported 10 events with strategic health authorities to promote the benefits of the Knowledge and Skills Framework for staff and employers.
  • Worked with 171 trusts to deliver measured improvements through our large scale workforce change programmes in 2007/08.

Aim 2. Support the NHS to recruit and retain the right staff

  • More than 800 individuals per month are registering to find out about their future careers through www.stepintothenhs.nhs.uk.
  • Managed NHS Jobs, which is now the number one job site in the UK, attracting more visits than any other recruitment site.
  • On average, we provided more than 3000 staff induction packs to trusts each month.
  • Our 11 Positively Diverse lead sites championed good practice across the six equality strands.
  • Provided a one-stop shop for trusts, with comprehensive coverage of 45 staff health, safety and wellbeing topics in The healthy workplaces handbook.

Aim 3. Support NHS change and development

  • Wrote directly to trusts 15 times to keep them informed of MMC developments between March and December 2007.
  • Provided workforce news, updates and information to more than 3000 subscribers to NHS Workforce bulletin each week.
  • Received more than 100,000 visits per month to our website.
  • Published 55 briefings, guides, reports and summaries covering key workforce issues.
  • Kept more than 2000 delegates in touch with the latest workforce developments through our national conferences and seminars.

Aim 4. Shape and advise on policy, legislation and regulation

  • Developed a joint action plan with NHS trade unions to create opportunities for newly qualified healthcare professionals through the Social Partnership Forum.
  • Contributed the views of more than 100 employing trusts to the Tooke Inquiry into Modernising Medical Careers.
  • In Europe, we helped to challenge some of the European Commission proposals in relation to cross-border healthcare in Europe.
  • Represented employer views on five working groups and three sub-groups to place employers at the forefront of the professional regulation agenda.

Aim 5. Work in partnership, build reputation and profile

  • Gathered written evidence from more than 160 employers to submit to the pay review bodies.
  • Engaged with more than 700 individuals through our policy board, forums and reference groups.
  • Responded to about 730 media calls in 2007.
  • Gained international recognition for our model policies for older workers, as one of the seven organisations identified in a 2007 study by AARP International.
  • Conducted in-depth research into the perceptions of 60 senior stakeholders on the performance and future direction for NHS Employers.
