Healthy workplaces

Hospital porters transferring documents

NHS Employers is committed to working with employers to make the NHS a safe and healthy place in which to work.

We provided advice and guidance to NHS organisations on a wide range of issues including general health and safety, as well as occupational health, mental health, stress, musculoskeletal disorders and sickness absence management.

Pages in this section

Domestic violence
The issue for the NHS is two-fold - as the employer of staff who are victims, and as the service that deals with the physical and mental problems resulting from domestic violence.

Workplace stress
NHS Employers is supporting employers to tackle stress in their organisations with a major programme of work for 2005/06. Workplace stress presents a major challenge for all employers.

Health in work
NHS Employers provides guidance to NHS organisations and their staff on occupational health and safety and works with other organisations such as the Health and Safety Executive, NHS Plus and the Department of Health to offer the most up-to-date advice and guidance.

Back in Work Awards Campaign
Back problems and musculo-skeletal disorders remain the major cause of sickness absence in the NHS. NHS Employers' Back in Work Campaign is part of an endeavour to tackle back problems and reduce sickness absence.

Statutory and mandatory training
NHS Employers has joined the Health and Safety Executive, the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) and the City and Guilds in endorsing three new e-learning packages produced by the NHS Core Learning Unit.

Bullying and harassment
NHS Employers are supporting National Ban Bullying at Work Day on 7th November 2006. If you are a member of staff who is being bullied, please refer to the staff guidance for advice and contacts for help. Employers can find model policy, guidance and other information. This page will be updated with more materials in the coming months.

NHS national staff survey
NHS Employers and the Healthcare Commission held a number of regional workshops to help employers interpret their local survey results and inform trust action plans.

Get involved in healthy workplaces
We are committed to help and support the NHS in driving the workforce agenda and in having an independent voice on workforce issues. We host a number of groups and input to consultations to ensure that employer involvement is central to all our work around healthy workplaces.
