NHS Employers provides guidance and advice to NHS organisations on policies and procedures designed to prevent unsuitable people obtaining employment in the NHS.

Pre-appointment checklist
This guidance covers all the pre-appointment checks that employers are required to make before appointing anyone - employees, volunteers, students, trainees - to a position in the NHS.

Post-appointment checklist
This guidance covers all the post-appointment checks that employers are required to make before appointing anyone - employees, volunteers, students, trainees - to a position in the NHS.

Protection of children
The Protection of Children Act 1999 (PoCA) is a statutory scheme. Where the critiera of the Act are satisfied, the NHS employer is required to carry out a PoCA check before a person can be appointed.

Protection of vulnerable adults
Although there are no plans to implement protection of vulnerable adults (PoVA) in the NHS, care needs to be taken when recruiting staff to posts which involve the care of the most vulnerable adult patients.

Criminal Records Bureau
The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) is responsible for dealing with requests for criminal record disclosures. It helps to ensure that no unsuitable people are employed by the NHS.

Alert notice system
The Department of Health (DH) announced the 'Healthcare Professionals Alert Notices Directions 2006' on 2 November 2006. This is a revised directive for issuing alert notices for healthcare professionals in England, which replaces Health Service Circular 2002/011. This directive is mandatory and should be implemented by all NHS bodies from 6 Decemb
