Workforce Improvement Themes

The Workforce Improvement Themes are a rich source of information that has  been developed to help the NHS achieve optimum workforce capability.

The information and evidence-based tools contained within the themes have enabled many NHS organisations to improve service planning and delivery, staff performance and satisfaction, and patient care.  In particular, the themes can help support the implementation of Agenda for Change, role redesign, the consultant contract, the Working Time Directive and better retention and recruitment practices.

The themes have been structured to address a variety of workforce issues which are challenging today’s healthcare organisations. These include attracting staff, using staff skills effectively and retaining and developing staff.  Within each theme you will find information, tools, case studies and advice that address these challenges.

The information contained in each theme is aimed at HR managers, clinical directors, modernisation leads/project managers as well as front line staff.  The various assessment and enabling tools contained in each theme have been tested and developed by the NHS for the NHS and they are flexible enough to allow for local variation and adaptation. We hope this resource will help you achieve all round excellence in workforce planning, development and management now and in the future.
