TRANSCRIPT:

Cromer to Kyoto Project, with Laura Middleton

Hi, my name is Laura Middleton and this is my project, from Cromer to Kyoto.

A journey discovering climate change to see that we can make a difference.

The project its involving a girl called Sally and her granddad. She asked her granddad ‘what’s Climate change got to do with me’. So they then go on a journey throughout time and space and discover about climate change and how they could be part of the solution.

They go back in time to discover how carbon dioxide is stored in the Carboniferous era. They learn that trees absorb carbon dioxide and store it in their trunks so the carbon dioxide is stored and saved as you would save your money in a bank account, which leads us nicely on how carbon dioxide is then released again”.

Sally and granddad go to the industrial revolution where they discover changes in energy consumption.

And this idea was to really explain the international effort to combat climate change and how these efforts come about.

The next part of their journey is about learning how Climate change is affecting the UK and the impact of climate change in the UK.

Also not just the impact, they are learning about part of the solution of the problem, and one of the main ones is offshore wind and wind power for the region.

In 2050, 1 in 100 homes in the U.K. could be under water true/false. True. And then we learn about sea level rise and what might happen in the future.

You shouldn’t turn off fluorescent lights when you leave a room; it takes more energy to turn it back on again. true/false.  False! This is an old wives tale; turning any light off when we leave a room saves money and energy.

You do not have to go back to dark ages to do something about the climate change. So for example Sally is woken up by electric alarm clock, granddad had a windup clock, and these are the changes Sally is going to make.

There are small things, small changes that everyone can make so their lifestyle really makes a difference. So the idea of this game is to try and think about carbon emissions you produce in your everyday lifestyle, in the household and through transport. And see if there are areas you can reduce your carbon emissions.

What I wanted to do with this project is communicate science specifically Climate change science, in a way that people can understand and engage with in a fun and interactive way. Therefore, I hope that I managed to do that.
