Around the Garden in 80 Ways

7-11 11-14 Book £5 to £10

Description:

This handbook looks at ways of using plants to raise development issues. It is an excellent resource for teachers wishing to link classroom work with visits to Botanic Gardens and other plant collections. Teachers were involved in the development of the handbook. They used the 'development compass rose' (a technique for exploring the links between natural, economic, social and political processes) to generate ideas which they then followed up in class. One class of 10 year olds looked at plants which have been deliberately introduced to the UK by plant-hunters and considered the attitudes of the plant-hunters to the people and places where they gethered their samples. There are lots of good ideas like this in the handbook.
