Research Management

Centrally funded DFID research is managed by the Central Research Department (CRD). The head of the department is Joanne Alston and the deputy head is Emma Spicer. Peter O'Neill is Special Adviser and Tracy Tasker is Strategy Adviser to the Head of Department.

CRD comprises four teams. Three of the teams have responsibility for commissioning and managing research in specific sectors. The fourth team in addition to sectoral research also works with the other teams to improve the impact of research to reduce poverty through communication, dissemination and getting research into use.

CRD also works closely with DFID’s Chief Scientific Adviser to maintain external links, particularly with UK Science, Whitehall and political stakeholders, that promote DFID’s agenda.

The teams are:

  • Human Development - health and education. Team leader Sue Kinn.

  • Growth and Livelihoods - economic growth, agricultural productivity, transport and energy systems. Team leader David Howlett.

  • Social, Political and Environmental Change (SPEC) – adaptation to climate change, governance, citizenship, migration, chronic poverty, water and sanitation, faiths and development. Acting team leader Simon Anderson.

  • Communications – Communication and dissemination of research, ICTs, innovation systems. Acting Team leader Abby Mulhall.

Enquiries should in the first instance be directed through the DFID Public Enquiry Point.
