Details of all scientific procedures performed
on living animals are collected from licensees
performing or supervising those procedures
under the provisions of section 21 of the
Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
The information is published annually by the
Stationery Office in a Command Paper entitled
Statistics of Scientific Procedures on living
animals, Great Britain, (year) and includes
comprehensive tables containing details of
the species of animals used, and the nature,
reason and purpose of procedures started during
that year.
The
information collected and published is used
by government in formulating policy on animal
use in scientific work. The publication also
provides information to the scientific community,
animal welfare organisations and the general
public.
