Disease control: Contingency Planning
Contingency Plans for the various notifiable diseases follow a standard format as required by the European Union, with minor differences of detail.
Contingency Plan for Exotic Animal Diseases
Defra's revised Contingency Plan for Exotic Animal Diseases was laid before Parliament on 10th December 2007. The plan covers arrangements for dealing with a range of exotic animal diseases, including Foot and Mouth Disease, Avian Influenza and, for the first time, Rabies and Bluetongue. Exercise Hawthorn: National-Scale Avian Influenza Exercise, 5 April 2006
The Government, in partnership with the Devolved Administrations, began a real-time simulation of an outbreak of avian influenza disease in poultry in this country on the 5 April 2006 in order to check its contingency plans for the control of any such outbreak and those of its agencies and operational partners. This exercise was the culmination of a programme of smaller tabletop exercises and workshops. Further information...
Avian Influenza – Carcase Disposal Review
The department has undertaken a review of carcase disposal and published
the findings in the report "A risk-based
review of carcase disposal options in the event of a notifiable exotic
animal disease – methodology and application to avian influenza"
(217 KB).
The report is the final output from a series of meetings and a facilitated
expert workshop held at Cranfield University during early 2006. The report
has been subject to consultation within the expert group and was also
peer reviewed
(11 KB) by Professor Roy Harrison from the University of Birmingham. The
report was subsequently redrafted to reflect the feedback.
The report findings support the current disposal hierarchy and approach
to carcase disposal as detailed in Defra's Overview
of Emergency Preparedness for Exotic Animal Diseases.
The report and associated annexes are living/working documents and they will be used to inform and develop disposal policy and operational planning for carcases and other wastes arising from outbreaks of avian disease. There are also plans to repeat the process, using the methodology outlined in the report, to review the disposal of carcases from outbreaks of foot and mouth disease, classical swine fever and other similar exotic diseases.
Please note that only annexes A & G are included as part of the main report. The other documents are working documents used or produced during the workshop and subsequent working group meetings. As such, they are not formatted for printing and some of the documents do not include all the background analysis or assumptions made. All the annexes are however, available on request.
If you have any comments or observations on the methodology; approach taken; or on the findings of this study please send them to: svshqcontingencyplanning@svs.gsi.gov.uk
