Zoonoses and foodborne animal pathogens
Zoonoses are defined by the World Health Organisation as "Diseases and infections which are naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man". A zoonotic agent may be a bacterium, virus, fungus, parasite, or other communicable agent. Zoonoses cover a broad range of diseases with different clinical and epidemiological features and control measures.

2 October 2007 - New legislation to support surveillance of zoonoses and zoonotic agents in all animals came in to force on 1 October 2007. Further information...
18 July 2007 - Consultation: Consultation on the National Control Programme for Salmonella in Laying Flocks (Gallus gallus). The consultation will close on 10 October 2007 in order for the legislation to be in place for January 2008. A news release has been issued.
