UK Zoonoses Group
The UK Zoonoses Group provides a forum for the discussion of animal and human health aspects of zoonoses (diseases and infections transmissable between animals and man) and their control, and met for the first time in October 2001. The UK Zoonoses Group replaced the National Zoonoses Group for England (NZG) which was established in April 1999 under the Chairmanship of Professor Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer for England. Meetings are chaired in rotation by each of the UK Chief Medical Officers.
The formation of the UK Zoonoses Group is in line with the recommendation in the Phillips Report on BSE (published in October 2000) for better liaison between central government, devolved administrations, and local enforcement and health organisations on animal and human health issues that have implications for the whole of the UK.
Although Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland had observer status on
the former National Zoonoses Group for England, and each has its own zoonoses
group, the UK Zoonoses Group is intended to help develop a more cohesive,
comprehensive and joint approach to the understanding and control of zoonotic
diseases in the UK.
The UK Zoonoses Group held its first meeting on 2 October 2001, and meets
at least twice a year.
More generally, in relation to zoonoses in the UK Ministers agreed in 1999 to the production of an annual Zoonoses Report. Annual reports on zoonoses in the UK are available for the years 1998 onwards.
