Foot and mouth disease is an infectious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, in particular cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, camelids and deer. Since 3 August 2007 there have been 8 confirmed cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Surrey and Windsor and Maidenhead.
Following extensive surveillance work, veterinary risk assessment
(33 KB) and there having been no further cases of FMD discovered, from 31 December 2007 all remaining movement restrictions relating to FMD-susceptible animals and trade within the EU have been lifted. For further information please see the main movements homepage.

If you suspect signs of any notifiable disease, you must immediately notify your local Divisional Veterinary Manager. If you need further information or advice not covered by these pages please contact the Defra Helpline on 08459 33 55 77 which is currently operating between 9am - 5pm, 5 days a week.
