The EIW Global Opportunities Fund programme supports the group's work and saw funds double from £4.5 million in 04/05 to a final spend of £9.8 million for the financial year 05/06. The programme is in its third year and currently supports approximately 50 projects in the Middle East and North African and 25 programmes in other Muslim countries, including Afghanistan, South and South East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
The programme has already had some success in encouraging reforms and real changes in the promotion of good governance, the rule of law and women's participation in decision making. It aims to support changes that will be sustained beyond the life of each specific project.
Examples of GOF-EIW project work include: improving administrative and educational structures of Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia; promoting women's participation in governance in Afghanistan and Pakistan; improving the management of Libyan and Moroccan prisons; legal aid and advice for Muslim women in East Africa; training journalists to cover elections effectively in Egypt and Yemen; and an interfaith conference in Cyprus.
