What happened?
An earthquake occurred off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia on 26 December 2004. At 9.0-magnitude, the earthquake was the world's strongest since the Good Friday Earthquake (measured at 9.2-magnitude) which struck Alaska in the USA in 1964, and one of the largest ever recorded.
The multiple tsunamis created by the earthquake ravaged coastal areas all over the Indian Ocean. They devastated several coastal regions including the Indonesian province of Aceh, parts of the coast of Sri Lanka, coastal areas of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the resort island of Phuket in Thailand.
