Sustainable development

The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a good quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations.

The UK aims to pursue that goal through the EU in an integrated way by promoting sustainable, innovative and competitive economies that reduce poverty and deliver high levels of employment, and just societies that respect human rights and are democratic and well governed. This should be delivered in ways that protect and enhance the environment and optimise resource and energy use.
