Welcome to the sustainable procurement and development pages of the NHS PASA website. Sustainable development is increasing in importance for health and social care organisations with greater focus on issues such as climate change, waste, food and transport.
These pages provide a background on this agenda alongside examples of initiatives and practical guidance on incorporating sustainability within your work-plan.

What's new
The final closing date for entries for the Suppliers Delivering Sustainability and Sustainable Procurement awards has now been extended up to Friday 24 October. Suppliers can apply using the online application form available at www.scawards.co.uk .
With effect from 1 July 2008 BREEAM for Healthcare has replaced the NHS Environmental Assessment Tool (NEAT). BREEAM is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. BREEAM (or equivalent) is advocated at Government level as a robust means of setting standards and assessing the sustainability of the Government estate, including the estate of public sector bodies. This is now available on the Building Research Establishment's website
The NHS Sustainable Development Unit has published its draft carbon reduction strategy for the NHS in England. Procurement has been identified as key in helping to reduce carbon. The consultation period has been extended up to 30th September 2008 - with either personal or organisational responses able to be made at www.sdu.nhs.uk
The 2009 awards are now open for suppliers to register on-line at www.scawards.co.uk . If any NHS organisation has done any innovative work on this agenda with any of their suppliers, please forward these details on to them.
Toolkit - Energy Cost Comparison
The Centre for Evidence-based Purchasing supported by DEFRA are developing a tool to enable comparisons of energy performance and whole-life energy costs for medical devices. If you are interested in looking at this and providing feedback, please contact david.ford@pasa.nhs.uk .
NHS PASA has been working with the Ethical Trade Initiative (ETI) to investigate working conditions in NHS supply chains and how this is currently being addressed by procurement teams. A report has been produced with recommendations and an indicative ethical procurement framework tool.
Guidance has been produced aimed at trusts looking to ensure that sustainability is incorporated within its procurement process. This was launched at the Procurement Solutions 2008 event in June 2008. Please contact us if you require hard copies of this roadmap leaflet.
