Healthy Futures Update Autumn 2008

Taking the long term view: the Department of Health’s strategy for delivering sustainable development 2008-2011 sets out a new framework which will underpin decision-making on sustainable development in the future and outlines a programme of action to help deliver a strong healthy and just society whilst living within environmental limits.

NHS Saving Carbon strategy front coverSaving Carbon, Improving Health: Draft NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy: The consultation closed on the 30th September having received a fantastic response rate from organisations across the NHS with a majority of trusts responding. The Sustainable Development Unit would like to thank everyone who responded. The final strategy will be launched at the end of January 2009.

Supporting this strategy, the NHS England Carbon Footprinting Report has been carried out by the Sustainable Development Commission and the Stockholm Environment Institute, showing that the NHS is the UK's largest public sector contributor to climate change and is responsible for 18 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. This has now been updated to include a technical briefing report.

Good Corporate Citizenship Assessment Model

In the two and a half years since the Good Corporate Citizenship Assessment Model was launched, we have had a great response from the NHS. We want to make sure it remains as useful, relevant and ambitious as possible, so together with the NHS SD Unit, the Sustainable Development Commission is conducting a review of the Model. If you would like to feed into this process and contribute ideas on how the Model can be improved, please contact Susan Gransden.

To date the Model has received over 25,500 visitors, and 535 organisations are now registered users, including 261 NHS organisations. Our Progress in Practice case studies show you just what can be achieved – make use of them to inspire your organisation!
