National Environmental Health Action Plan

The UK National Environmental Health Action Plan (NEHAP) was published in 1996. It contained an overview of the provisions for environment and health in the UK at that time. Work was put in hand to publish an updated version of the NEHAP but this was overtaken by the development of a comprehensive UK Sustainable Development Strategy encompassing environmental goals alongside our social and economic agenda. (For historical reference purposes only the last version of NEHAP can be found at www.defra.gov.uk/environment/nehap/nehap-org.htm)

The UK Sustainable Development Strategy 'A better quality of life' was published in 1999. It describes the aim of sustainable development as ensuring 'a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come' and sets out economic, social and environmental objectives to be met at the same time. The strategy is currently being reviewed and a revised strategy is to be in place by 2005. More information on sustainable development can be found on the Government website at
