When Khoi Vinh, design director of the NYTimes.com website, dropped the rolled-up paper on the coffee table, it landed with a thud that woke the dog. I check the NYTimes.com website every day, but it had been at least a year since I read the print version of the Sunday Times. What struck me first was the size of it. Even with a precipitous decline in advertising, resulting in fewer pages, the p...

When you use the Times Reader for the first time, you’re struck by the wealth of rich content at your fingertips, by the adept translation of the print paper’s feel into electronic format, and by the ease with which you can navigate and resize the app.
But you’re probably not aware of what makes this all possible—the Text Layout Framework, a new, extensible ActionScript library...

Justin Van Slembrouck was well–equipped to be the lead designer on the Times Reader project. He has great digital chops, as well as experience designing for print, and a deep affinity for the form. Indeed, he notes that while working on the Times Reader, he occasionally felt a certain envy toward his Times colleagues, whose work finds its expression not in pixels, but in ink on paper.

Why is it that we've seen plenty of multitouch systems – in movies, TV, and grainy YouTube clips – and not much in our daily lives? To get hands-on with multitouch, you need the hardware and software working in synch to support it. With the release of the MacBook Pro and Air laptops last year, Apple provides access to multitouch functionality that’s easy to use – without the need for custo... Views: 5974

After far too many years in the technology business, I've become used to the idea that the future sometimes stays in the future forever. And much of what's really cool and exciting, even when you know it’s coming, takes a long time to arrive. Recall, for example, the long delay between John Warnock's paper on antialiasing and the appearance of antialiased type in Photoshop.

Be careful what you wish for. As soon I saw the videos of the Microsoft Surface, I wanted to check it out in person. First off, let me start by mentioning that I am not a scholar. I’m a wanna-be architect who turned to graphic design, trying to escape the world of physics and mathematics, who eventually started scripting, then programming, and finally ended up architecting immense visualizations of data from both databases and realtime streams. I’m the product of a very special point in time, when we were ju... Views: 6248

Back in 2006, we built an app called the Tour Tracker, which enabled fans to follow A Tour of California, one of the world’s premiere bike races, in real time, from their browsers. We thought it was pretty cool beans - it provided access to a live video feed, highlight videos and photos, dynamically updated standings and race maps, and bunch of other neat stuff.

There has always been a certain amount of playfulness in my interactive work. My approach to making designs playful has evolved over time, and I focus more now on functionality – especially since these days, I mostly build applications, rather than doing content-based work. The ultimate goal, for me, has always been to let playfulness be the element that stimulates discovery, and simplifies func... Views: 7612

What is a brand? Hint: it’s not a logo, it’s not an identity system, it’s not a product, and it’s not what you say it is, just because you say so. A brand is a person’s gut feeling about a product, service, or organization. Individuals (emotional and intuitive beings) define brands not companies, markets, or the public at large.
Brand happens when a person experiences your product.

There was a time, not so long ago, when everyone shot photos on film, and every click moved you closer to the end of the roll. Every snapshot was one less on which to capture 'The Shot.' Each click of the shutter was the sound of coins across the counter of the photo lab.

I ran into a quote recently attributed to one of my favorite experience designers, Jesse James Garrett, who was trained as a journalist. “A journalist and an information architect face exactly the same problem - how to give shape to the pile of information in front of you in a way that will make it easy and natural for people to comprehend. I can't imagine any better preparation for the work I d...

Last week, I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days with the Adobe XD team. While I want to discuss the particular insights I gleaned from the team, I thought I’d start with a more general topic that, as far as I know, is rarely taught, seldom written about, and only discussed over beers among project teams.
Designing an experience that is consistent, elegant, and effective isn’t enoug...

As a child, I remember coloring with my mother and marveling at how she could stay in the lines. Everything she did looked so good and I wanted to be able to color in the lines too. As any form of communication becomes more influential, commercial interests begin to take note. Guerrilla marketing firms begin to pop up. Ad agencies hire street teams. Many public messages, from wheat-pasting to stickers and stencils are used simply to promote an artist. Without communicating a clear idea (other than "look where I put my signature"), these can lose their impact on the average citizen.
