Everyone urged to ACT ON CO2

The Government’s ACT ON CO2
campaign is stepping up a gear from today with new TV, press, radio and online advertising together with a new campaign website featuring a range of advice, tools and guidance on saving money and saving energy.
The ACT ON CO2 campaign was launched last year to increase understanding of the individual action, CO2 emissions and climate change. Part of the campaign, the carbon calculator, enables people to reliably calculate their carbon footprint from home energy, appliances and transport. It also raises awareness of the different actions people can take in their everyday lives to help tackle climate change.
The new media activities launching this week aim to keep the link between behavioural action and carbon dioxide emissions at the forefront of the individual’s fight against climate change. We’re encouraging everyone to think about easy and practical ways that can save you money and energy by adopting behaviours.
Hot tips for you
- Use energy efficient light bulbs – an energy efficient bulb produces less CO2 and can save up to £60 in electricity over its lifetime.
- Make sure your house is insulated properly – most UK homes don’t have the recommended amount of insulation. By properly insulating your home you could save £180 a year on your heating bills.
- Be even more energy efficient – simple actions reduce both fuel bills and CO2 emissions. Making your home as energy efficient as possible could save you over £300 a year.
Save money, save energy
To help people cope with rising fuel prices, the Government last week announced a package of new energy saving measures. Households in the UK can now get help to save up to £300 every year on energy bills.
The Home Energy Saving Programme provides assistance to householders to make their homes more energy efficient. For those most at risk of fuel poverty, including all pensioners, it will give help with their bills this winter through the winter fuel payments and lower energy company tariffs.
Environment Secretary, Hilary Benn said:
“The Government has a longstanding commitment to help those living in fuel poverty, but recent price rises mean we are committed to do even more to assist people in reducing their bills where possible. And energy companies must do their bit too.
“This plan is about giving help, not only over weeks and months, but over the coming the years by enabling householders to make their homes more energy efficient.”
