Inter Departmental Archives Committee

The United Kingdom Inter-Departmental Archives Committee (IDAC) was set up in February 1996 as an essential co-ordinating mechanism within government for the handling of archive policy issues.

Composition

IDAC comprises the representatives from the following government bodies:

  • The National Archives: the Chief Executive (Keeper of Public Records) chairs IDAC on behalf of the Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs and Lord Chancellor
  • The National Archives of Scotland (NAS)
  • The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI)
  • Department of Communities and Local Government
  • The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)
  • The Department for Education and Skills (DfES)
  • The Scottish Executive
  • The National Assembly for Wales
  • Cymal: Museums Archives and Libraries Wales

In addition, the following bodies outside government have been invited to serve as expert advisers:

  • The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA)
  • The National Council on Archives (NCA)
  • The British Library
