Appraisal policy

The Appraisal policy defines the methods used to determine which government records are worthy of permanent preservation.

A background paper, circulated for consultation purposes April to June 2004, provides an explanation of the Grigg system and The National Archives' proposed approach to appraisal methods.

Since the publication of the Appraisal policy, The National Archives has prepared guides for departments on how the ideas should be implemented in practice.
