  • Defra has published the note of the meeting held between former members of the Independent Scientific Group on cattle TB and the former Chief Scientific Advisor, Sir David King to discuss badgers and bovine TB in cattle, held on Thursday 13 December 2007. Links to correspondence between ex-members of the ISG and EFRA Select Committee and a published paper by Jenkins et al entitled, 'The effects of annual widespread badger culls on cattle TB following the cessation of culling' are also available.

  • Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has today made a statement to Parliament about bovine TB and badgers, including that our policy will be not to issue licences to control bovine TB, increased investment in vaccines, and establishment of a bovine TB Partnership Group with industry.

  • The Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) has produced a report analysing the comparative field performance of tuberculins Adobe acrobat pdf file (164 KB) produced by VLA Weybridge and by Dutch manufacturer ID Lelystad between 1 January 2005 and 31 March 2007.

  • Defra has published a list of bovine TB data that could be made available to researchers for further investigation into the epidemiology of bovine TB, subject to the relevant research requirements (Pack Code: AHW-TB RRD 2008-09).

  • The TB Advisory Group has written to Lord Rooker Adobe acrobat pdf file (590 KB) providing an update on its work and reporting on the discussions the Group has had with stakeholders. These discussions focused in particular on the Final Report of the Independent Scientific Group on Cattle TB (ISG).

  • Defra has published final reports of 3 research projects, on (i) the application of postgenomics to investigate the nature of Mycobacterium bovis (SE3030), (ii) the demographic, ecological and epidemiological consequences of culling badgers (SE3032) and (iii) the ecological consequences of removing badgers from an ecosystem (ZF0531).

  • Defra has published final reports of 2 research projects, on (i) an in-depth histopathology of lymph node granulomas (lesions) in bovine TB (SE3225), and (ii) the development of tools to study immunopathology in badger TB (SE3226).

  • Defra has today published the final reports of two research projects, on (i) a multivariate analysis of risk factors affecting bTB incidents in cattle herds (SE3004), and (ii) the testing of vaccine candidates for bTB using a low dose aerosol challenge guinea pig model (SE3209).

  • Defra has today published monitoring data of the extended use of the gamma interferon test in Great Britain since October 2006. These statistics will be updated on a monthly basis.

  • Defra has today published the final report of a research project (SE3036) examining the role of wild deer in the perpetuation of TB in cattle.

  • Defra has today published final reports of two research projects (WM0311 and WM0310), designed to assess current baseline data on the badger population in England.

  • Final reports of three Defra funded research projects were published today, on (i) the risk to cattle from Mycobacterium bovis infection in wildlife species other than badgers (SE3009), (ii) the dynamics and risk factors for bovine TB transmission in restocked herds (SE3026), and (iii) disease dynamics and diagnostic strategies for low dose TB infection in cattle (SE3024).

  • Advice on husbandry best practice to help reduce the risk of bovine TB transmission has been published. This was produced by the Bovine TB Husbandry Working Group which includes members from farming, veterinary and wildlife organisations.

  • The TB Advisory Group's advice to Defra Ministers and the Chief Veterinary Officer on pre-movement testing PDF document logo (61 KB) has now been published. The report makes a number of useful recommendations to improve the practical delivery of pre-movement testing. A news release has been issued.
