About us

We look at the whole picture of adult social care in England. This includes social services teams at councils, care homes and care agencies.

We regulate, inspect and review all adult social care services in the public, private and voluntary sectors in England.

We give a star rating to councils and, from 2008, a quality rating to care services.

How we are run

What we do

We put the people who use social care services at the heart of all we do. We listen to their views and involve them in our inspections.

We are independent but set up by Government to promote improvements in social care and stamp out bad practice.

We report our findings to the Government and publish a report to Parliament every year on the state of social care.

More about our work

We look mostly at adults' services. Since April 2007, social care services for children have been monitored by Ofsted.
