Monitoring & Assessment
The concept of 'National Statistics' was launched in June 2000 in the conceptual document 'Framework for National Statistics'. Originally, the label was given to any official statistics produced in accordance with the arrangements set in the Framework document, and compliant with the professional standards set out in the 'National Statistics Code of Practice'. Official statistics which met these quality criteria could then be branded with the 'National Statistics' logo.
With effect from 1 April 2008, and in accordance with the 'Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007', official statistics can only be designated as 'National Statistics' following a formal assessment of their compliance with the UK Statistics Authority's 'Code of Practice for Statistics'.
