The annual health check 2007/08

This page gives a brief general introduction to how we assess an NHS trust’s performance in the annual health check, with more detailed information relating to the process in 2007/08.

What we look at when assessing performance

There are two parts to our overall assessment of a trust's performance: the quality of its healthcare services, and how effectively it manages its financial resources.

Quality of services

  • Is the trust getting the basics of healthcare right - in other words, is it meeting the Government's core standards and existing national targets for the NHS?
  • As well as getting the basics right, is the trust making and sustaining ongoing improvements in its services? We judge this by its performance against the Government's new national targets for the NHS.

Use of resources

When looking at how well a trust is managing its financial resources, we draw on work carried out by the Audit Commission and by Monitor, the regulator of NHS foundation trusts.
