Step 1 - identity checks

This page provides info about the sort of identity checks employers must do when employing individuals on or after 29 February 2008.

Employers may be presented with a document, or documents, from one of two lists.

List A – documents that establish that the person has an ongoing entitlement to work in the UK.

List B – documents that indicate that the applicant or employee has restrictions on their entitlement to be in the UK.

Although employers may request to see and take copies of other documentation of an individual’s identity, these will not be eligible for submission to establish a statutory excuse against a civil penalty.
