Minister visits frontline third sector organisations in Norwich

18 March 2009

KB.jpgToday (18 March), Minister for the Third Sector, Kevin Brennan will visit three third sector organisations in Norwich: Project Search at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, a Social Firm called Wholefood Planet Norwich, and a local recipient of one of the Government’s Grassroots Grants – the social enterprise Sustainable Living Initiative.

Over the coming months the Minister for the Third Sector will visit third sector organisations across the country to see first hand the issues facing charities, volunteers and social enterprises as they get to grips with the impact of the downturn.

Minister for the Third Sector, Kevin Brennan said:

“Norwich is trialling Project Search which aims to give opportunities to people with learning disabilities whilst improving the service the NHS can give to its patients. It is an exciting new approach to public service reform.

“Norwich is benefiting from Grassroots Grants, the Government’s programme to bring new funds to small local groups which is helping to support local communities across the country.

“I am also in Norwich to open the premises of Wholefood Planet Norwich, a fantastic social enterprise not only doing great work promoting healthy eating, but also creating jobs for people with learning disabilities in Norwich.

“It is essential to get out there and engage with the people who deliver frontline services in their communities. I want to make sure charities, voluntary groups, and social enterprises are aware of the Government help available to them, and that we have a comprehensive understanding of the challenges they face and the innovative ways they are tackling the economic downturn.”

Recent survey results show that there are 3,252 third sector organisations in Norfolk and to date approximately £300,000 has been invested in local community projects in the area through the Government’s Grassroots grants programme.
