Quick guide to getting your route value:

1. Set the Start and End of your route, adding any 'vias' if necessary. Use 'Select' to select 'Place' or 'Postcode'
Note: you must enter the place name or postcode and then click on 'Find', to find each location before calculating your route. Only part of the placename needs to be entered to return a list of matches. In addition apostrophes are not required when entering some locations.
2. Calculate the route using the icon. You can then amend the route and recalculate if necessary.
3. When you're happy with the route, calculate the value using the icon.
Return to these instructions at any point using the icon. For more detailed instructions see below.

To Create a Route

There are three ways of locating either the Start, via or End points:

By typing the Place name and clicking ‘find’

By typing the Postcode and clicking 'find'

By typing either in the ‘search’ box, clicking ‘find’ and pinpointing a specific location in the map window using the tool and using the Start ,via or End tools.

Helpful hints:

You will need to use the ‘select’ dropdown box at the top of the left panel to select whether you are entering apostcode or place name before clicking ‘find’

Postcodes should have no spaces. A list of options to select from will be generated if an exact match isn’t found.

The application uses very accurate street mapping. It is helpful to zoom to street level to accurately position any of the markers on a particular point.

Once the Start, End and via’s if needed have been defined, calculate the route using the tool.

The generated route will be displayed as a red line in the map window and as route directions in the bottom half of the screen.

Helpful hints:

The screen has two ‘browser’ windows.Using your mouse, click and drag the line separating the two windows to enlarge the lower one.

To Amend a Route

The application has been configured to bias towards Motorway and major roads to reflect the typical route a HGV would take.

If the route generated is not accurate for physical reasons such as low bridges or operational reasons such as Lorry Bans or other drive restrictions you can add or delete via’s to force the correct route.

Entering via’s can be done in the same way as detailed above.

Via’s will be ordered in the numbered panel, but can be moved or deleted as appropriate by highlighting the appropriate one and using , or

Use the tool to re calculate the route using the new vias.

To Calculate Benefits

Once an accurate route has been generated, the Environmental Benefit for that route can be calculated by clicking on the icon.

The results are displayed in a table in the lower screen.

Printing the Results

Clicking the icon opens a new browser window with the current map display at the top and the contents of the lower window beneath ready for you to print.

Starting Again

Click on the icon to clear a set of results.

General Navigation and other features

The mapping has a very large range of scalability right down to street level mapping.

Zooming in or out can be done by either selecting or and in the map window clicking on the location you want to zoom into or out from. The map will centre at this point.

You can also use the zoom control tool to the right side of the map window to go to pre-defined levels of detail.

Clicking on will toggle on and off an overlay on the map of the zones used for the DFT's Company Neutral Revenue Support scheme.

The button will always bring this page back.
