Road network

This section contains reference points and information regarding the development, maintenance and operation of both the local and national road network in England.

The road network is often defined as a mix of Strategic roads - the main national network of motorways and major roads much of which is managed by the Highways Authority; and Local roads - those managed by local or regional highway authorities. This section is categorised accordingly, with each section containing appropriate sub-divisions such as maintenance and streetworks. Best Value Performance Indicators are available in the Service levels sub-directory of Local Roads for example.

The Road Policy sub-division contains general documents of relevance to all road management, including 'Managing our Roads', The Department for Transport's key discussion document on the UK's road network, published in July 2003.

Roads Policy

Overarching policy and strategy documents related to the management of the road network in England. Includes 'Managing our Roads', the Department's main road strategy publication, and guidance on the procedures for inquiries held into road proposals.

Strategic Roads

Information related to the maintenance and operation of the national road network. Strategic roads are the major highways including most motorways and some A roads.

Local Roads

Information related to the management of all local public roads by the local highway authority (typically the County or Metropolitan Council). Includes few motorways, all other A roads, and all other public roads including B and C roads.
