• Births, Marriages & Deaths
  When you start your family history research it is crucial that you obtain primary source material. This will allow you to verify and document your family tree.
• Religious Records
  Parish registers and records from other faiths are the key source for records of “life events” such as baptisms, marriages and burials before the advent of civil registration in the 19th century.
• Census
  The census is a survey taken by the government every 10 years to collect information on the population of the United Kingdom.
• Wills
  Wills are among the most useful sources for family history. They can provide details of an individual’s family and possessions.
• Immigration
  For many people, tracing their family history will lead them to an ancestor who was born abroad but came to live in the United Kingdom.
• Emigration
  Over the last 600 years, many foreigners have come and made their home in the UK. Some have been victims of persecution in their homelands, others have come in search of a new life.
• Military Records
  Many family histories will include individuals who served in one of the armed forces; the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Indian Army, Royal Indian Airforce or Indian Naval services.
• Adoption
  Legal adoption was introduced in the United Kingdom in the first half of the twentieth century.
