Partners

The FamilyRecords.gov.uk consortium is made up of the partners listed in the menu to the left, and below. The partners are either government departments or public sector bodies.

They hold much of the primary source material which should help you in your family history research. We realise that it can be hard to find out which institution holds the records you need so we hope to simplify the process by providing this one point of access.

• Access to Archives (A2A)
  

  A2A is the English strand of the growing national archives network in the UK, together with sister projects in Scotland and Wales and for British universities and colleges.

• British Library (BL) – Indian Office Records
  

  The India Office Records are the documentary archives of the administration in London of the pre-1947 government of India.

• Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC)
  

  The CWGC is a joint governmental organisation tasked with looking after graves, memorials and records of the Commonwealth military forces resulting from warfare.

• General Register for Scotland (GROS)
  

  GROS is a government agency that deals with the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths in Scotland.

• Imperial War Museum (IMW)
  

  The Imperial War Museum features military vehicles, weapons, war memorabilia, a library, a photographic archive, and an art collection of 20th century and later conflicts, especially those involving Britain, and the British Empire.

• National Library of Wales (NLW)
  

  The NLW is the premier centre for family history research in Wales.

• The National Archives (TNA)
  

  The National Archives is a government department, and also an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice.

• National Archives of Scotland (NAS)
  

  NAS is the main archive for sources on the history of Scotland as a separate kingdom, her role in the British Isles and the links between Scotland and many other countries over the centuries.

• Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI)
  

  PRONI is the official place of deposit for all public records in Northern Ireland, many dating back to the early 19th century.

• Scottish Archive Network (SCAN)
  

  SCAN aims to revolutionise access to Scotland’s archives by providing a single electronic catalogue to the holdings of more than 50 Scottish archives.
